DVD Manufacturing FAQ’s

What is DVD ?

DVD is a high density compact disc, capable of holding from 7 to 14 times as much information as a conventional CD. It can hold Video, Audio or Computer Data allowing DVD Video, DVD Audio and DVD-ROM projects to be authored. DVD can be defined as either Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc.

What is DVD-5/ DVD-9 ?

A DVD-5 is a Single Layer Disc capable of storing up to 4.7GB of information on 1 side in 1 layer. A DVD-9 is a Dual Layer Disc capable of storing up to 8.5 GB of information on 1 side in 2 layers.

What is a Dual Layer Disc ?

A Dual Layer Disc entails two layers of data, one of them semi-transparent so the laser can focus through and read the second layer. It can hold twice the amount of information as a single-layer disc, allowing longer pieces of video to use higher encode rates meaning better quality.

What are the capacities of DVD ?

At an average encode rate of 4.7Mbps (MegaBits per sec.), a single-layer DVD can accommodate a two hour Video/Audio clip. A dual-layer disc can hold the same two hour clip at twice the encode rate (close to the 10.08 Mbps limit). A DVD-Video disc containing mostly audio can play for 13 hours (24 hours with dual layers).
